US wants fossil fuel focus in Belize’s $250M MCC Grant

US wants fossil fuel focus in Belize’s $250M MCC Grant

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize’s $250 million Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) grant remains on the table, but shifting priorities in Washington could alter how the funds are used. Prime Minister John Briceño confirmed that while the value of the grant may stay the same, the US government is signaling interest in diverting more of the money toward energy projects — including fossil fuels.

“That’s what they’re proposing,” Briceño explained. “They want to remove more from education and put it into energy — not only renewables, but fossil fuels as well. We’ll do our best to push for sustainable sources because Belize is known for its natural beauty, and we want to keep moving toward renewable energy.”

The Prime Minister said the government will continue engaging with US officials to limit any expansion of fossil fuels, stressing that Belize intends to uphold its commitment to sustainable development policies.
