By Belize Live News Staff: A newly released surveillance video aired by 7News has reignited public debate after it allegedly shows police officers abducting convicted fugitive Joseph Budna in Orange Walk Town on August 22nd.
The redacted video, reportedly provided by a confidential source, is grainy but appears to capture Budna being chased near Banquitas, close to the courthouse and police station. A vehicle identified as a blue Equinox is also seen in pursuit.
The footage shows Budna dashing back and forth while shouting before he collapses near the library. He is then beaten for several minutes by men alleged to be his abductors. During the assault, a uniformed police officer casually arrives at the scene, exchanges words with one of the aggressors, and then leaves without intervening.
Later, the video depicts Budna being carried away in full view of bystanders — just 100 feet from the police station. The Equinox is seen driving away shortly after.
7News says it can vouch for the authenticity of the video and argues that the sequence provides conclusive proof of police involvement in Budna’s abduction. Still, the footage has sparked divided opinions among Belizeans. Some believe it exposes police misconduct, while others dismiss it as a distraction from more pressing national issues, such as education, healthcare, and crime.
Officials have not yet released an official statement on the video.
