By Belize Live News Staff: Orange Walk businessman Jonathan Alexander Burgos has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after his surety asked the court to revoke his bail, citing his failure to attend hearings and maintain contact.
Burgos, 39, was charged in January for obtaining property by deception after allegedly tricking a Belize Coast Guard officer into paying $5,000 for a vehicle through a Facebook scam. He was granted bail, but since July he had reportedly stopped attending court, leading to a bench warrant being issued for his arrest.
When brought before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, Burgos told the Senior Magistrate that he had been working on San Pedro and misunderstood the dates of his hearings. The court was not persuaded, stressing that his repeated absences were unjustified.
His surety informed the court that Burgos had not been answering calls and failed to appear as required, leaving him with no choice but to request revocation of the bond. As a result, Burgos was remanded to prison until Friday, when the court will hear an application to determine whether he can secure another surety and remain on bail, or whether he will stay behind bars until trial.
For now, his fate depends on today’s hearing in Court #6.
