By Belize Live News Staff: Concerns about the safety of Mexico’s high-profile Tren Maya project grew on Tuesday after a train derailed in Izamal, Yucatán, on a critical stretch that connects to Campeche.
The accident happened just as Belizean interest in the project has surged, following the Prime Minister’s request for Belize to be included in the route. Many Belizeans expressed alarm online after news broke of the derailment.
Authorities confirmed there were no fatalities or serious injuries. However, the derailment disrupted train operations, leading to delays and renewed criticism of the project’s safety standards.
Mexican news reports suggest that the derailment highlights risks facing one of the most heavily promoted infrastructure projects in the region, a rail line that Mexico has billed as a transformative link for tourism and trade.
