Support mounts for Tren Maya expansion into Belize

By Belize Live News Staff: Momentum is building around the possible expansion of Mexico’s Tren Maya rail project into Belize. Prime Minister John Briceño recently met with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo, with the train link on the discussion table.

Though no final announcement has been made, Church Senator Louis Wade has joined those backing the project.

“The Tren Maya is a brilliant economic idea,” Wade said. “It connects Mérida to Cancún, Tulum, and Chetumal. The next logical step is Belize. Whether the train reaches San Pedro, the mainland, or elsewhere, we need this kind of development in Belize.”

Wade argued that Belize stands to benefit significantly in tourism. “Mexico attracts tourists from Europe, America, and around the world, particularly in Cancún, which is right at our doorstep. Why can’t they come to Belize too?” he asked.

Transport Minister Dr. Louis Zabaneh also weighed in, describing the potential extension as “a no brainer.” He noted that PM Briceño has lobbied Mexico’s leadership consistently, under both the former and current president. “They have already invested billions into the Tren Maya. It reaches our border, and discussions are ongoing about expansion into Guatemala. Belize must ensure it is part of that vision,” Zabaneh said.
