By Belize Live News Staff: In a historic trilateral meeting, Prime Minister John Briceño of Belize joined President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico and President Bernardo Arévalo of Guatemala to formalize an ambitious environmental pact – the Calakmul Declaration for the Biocultural Corridor of the Great Maya Forest.
The agreement, signed on Friday, aims to preserve a massive expanse of rainforest that spans the three nations, promoting sustainable development, ecotourism, and cultural heritage. PM Briceño described the deal as a rare and powerful example of regional unity.
“We’re very excited. I think this is the first time we’re meeting with three presidents together to be able to work,” Briceño told reporters. “We are pushing trade with Mexico and Guatemala and trying to open new markets, but this biosphere park between our countries is a priority.”
Following the signing, Mexico presented a video highlighting the natural and cultural significance of the corridor. Leaders from all three nations pledged ongoing cooperation to ensure the long-term survival of the Great Mayan Forest, one of the world’s most important biodiversity reserves.
