By Belize Live News Staff: Police have charged a 50-year-old customs guard in connection with the massive 133-pound marijuana seizure at a checkpoint near Belize’s northern border earlier this year.
Back in July, the bust made headlines after officers discovered tightly wrapped parcels of high-grade marijuana concealed inside a vehicle at the customs checkpoint. At the time, 70-year-old Eric Duheney was arrested and charged, but reports indicated that a passenger had slipped away just moments before the checkpoint stop.
Following several weeks of investigation, police have now identified that passenger as Shaka Jones of Halls Layout, Corozal District. Jones, who serves as a customs guard, was formally charged with drug trafficking. He appeared in the Corozal Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where he entered a plea of not guilty. Given the seriousness of the offense, Jones was remanded to prison pending his next court appearance.
