By Belize Live News Staff: Police believe a shooting that occurred early Saturday morning in San Pedro is tied to the island’s ongoing drug-related conflicts. The incident happened around 4:25 a.m., outside a residence belonging to Logan and Mark Espat, two individuals reportedly well known to authorities.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Hilberto Romero, three masked gunmen opened fire, unleashing a barrage of bullets toward two apartment doors. Fortunately, no one was injured in the attack, though several expended shells were recovered at the scene.
“We do not know who the suspects are for this shooting,” said ACP Romero. “But yes, we know the rivalry they [the Espats] have in San Pedro with other persons.”
Both targets have reportedly cooperated with police, but as of now, no suspects have been identified, and the investigation remains ongoing. Officials also revealed that the assailants made their escape by boat.
ACP Romero confirmed that police are assessing the possibility of retaliatory violence and have increased presence on the island as a precautionary measure. “We know the history between both groups, so we’re monitoring closely,” he said.
