By Belize Live News Staff: As the Government of Belize moves forward with the full-scale rollout of the National Identification System, Opposition Leader Tracy Panton is calling on the Briceño administration to provide answers about what she says is an unnecessary and poorly planned initiative.
In a public social media statement titled “Make it Make Sense,” Panton criticized the government for celebrating the launch without first addressing key flaws in the country’s existing bureaucracy. “Once again, this administration is creating another layer of bureaucracy without fixing the inefficiencies that already exist in government services,” she said.
The National ID, which is touted as a step toward Belize’s digital transformation, has raised red flags for the Opposition. Panton pointed out the lack of transparency in the rollout, highlighting the absence of a clear public plan, no disclosed budget, and no solid guarantees that citizens’ personal data will be adequately protected.
“We are not opposed to modernization — far from it,” Panton emphasized. “But digital transformation must not come at the expense of access, accountability, or common sense.”
She questioned why Belizeans need yet another form of identification when they already have Social Security cards, Voter’s IDs, passports, and driver’s licenses. According to Panton, the introduction of a new ID system without proper consultation or safeguards only adds more confusion and red tape to the lives of everyday Belizeans.
“This is not just about tech upgrades — it’s about trust. Belizeans deserve a system that works for them, not another slogan wrapped in bureaucracy,” she said.
The Government, for its part, has insisted that the National ID will enhance service delivery and reduce fraud, but Panton and members of the Opposition are demanding a pause and a full explanation before further implementation continues.
