Government responds to sargassum crisis with emergency plan

B y Belize Live News Staff: The Cabinet has endorsed an Emergency Response Plan to address the growing sargassum crisis along Belize’s coastline. The move comes in response to reports showing a 70 percent increase in sargassum influx compared to the last major episode in 2022.

The plan, jointly developed by the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Blue Economy, includes immediate financial assistance for cleanup operations in affected communities. The government will allocate funding and provide incentives to support the collection and transportation of the seaweed to designated disposal sites.

In addition to the emergency response, the Cabinet directed the Sargassum Task Force to prepare medium- and long-term strategies, including an early warning system for future influxes. Officials are also urging stronger collaboration among ministries, local governments, and private sector partners to combat what’s now seen as a growing environmental and economic threat.
