By Belize Live News Staff: An 18-year-old male, accused of savagely attacking his mother with a construction bush stick, has been released from police custody, prompting an urgent safety advisory from concerned family members.
The mother is presently hospitalized at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) in Belize City, suffering from serious head, face, and hand injuries, and is slated for surgery on Wednesday, July 16.
The alleged assailant’s release comes after the expiration of the 48-hour legal holding period. Sources indicate that the victim’s severe medical condition rendered her incapable of formally pressing charges during this critical timeframe.
Family members have warned that the individual is dangerous and could pose a continued threat to both the victim and the wider community.
The Belize Police Department is facing increasing pressure to clarify what steps are being taken to mitigate the risk posed by the released individual, especially with the victim still in a vulnerable state.
