By Belize Live News Staff: A game-changing energy deal has been signed. Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) and Blair Athol Power Company Limited (BAPCOL) have officially entered into a historic Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to develop Belize’s first utility-scale solar plant, slated to come online in 2026.
The 15 MW solar facility—backed by a 1.5 MW / 3 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)—will rise in Buena Vista Village, Corozal, marking a massive leap toward Belize’s clean energy goals. The battery system will ensure stable power supply even when the sun isn’t shining.
BEL General Manager for Energy Markets, Jose Moreno, said the project “will set the foundation for future projects, including solar, wind, hybrid systems, and other emerging technologies.”
Construction is expected to begin soon, with operations targeted within 12 to 18 months. Once online, the plant will feed renewable energy directly into the national grid, strengthening energy independence and resilience.
BEL Chairman E. Andrew Marshalleck called the signing “a major milestone” and emphasized that the deal shows BEL’s full support for BAPCOL and Belize’s green energy future.
This agreement supports BEL’s Least Cost Expansion Plan (2023–2042) and aligns with Belize’s National Energy Plan, which targets 75% renewable energy generation by 2030.
Cleaner. Cheaper. Belizean-powered.
