Gov’t: Sargassum is a national problem—But not a national emergency yet

By Belize Live News Staff: Minister of Governance Henry Charles Usher says the sargassum problem is serious—but a national emergency declaration hasn’t been made just yet.

“This is something that impacts tourism, the coastline, and our image as a country,” he said. Usher acknowledged that massive amounts of seaweed have returned this year, as they did in 2022, 2023, and 2024.

He says the government has a task force in place and strategies are being developed—but warned: “It’s going to recur, so we have to be ready.”
