By Belize Live News Staff: As the United Democratic Party (UDP) convenes its National Party Council (NPC) meeting today, a storm of controversy is brewing within the party. Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton has distanced herself from the gathering, describing its current structure as illegitimate and lacking constitutional basis.
In a letter sent to Chairman Mike Peyrefitte on the eve of the meeting, Panton warned that the NPC, as presently composed, undermines transparency and fairness. She took issue with her own exclusion from the delegate list, stating that including unelected individuals while sidelining elected MPs sends the wrong message about the party’s internal governance.
Her absence today may trigger a boycott among her supporters, raising questions about whether the NPC can proceed effectively. Panton has demanded that the party first address outstanding conventions in constituencies without elected UDP representatives.
“The upcoming NPC, in its current form, is unconstitutional,” she concluded in her letter.
As the NPC unfolds today, all eyes are on whether the meeting proceeds smoothly or marks yet another chapter of discord within the fractured party.
