Cabinet greenlights major reforms for sugar industry

Sugar industry declared in crisis as pests and fungus threaten collapse

By Belize Live News Staff: The Government of Belize is moving ahead with major reforms to modernize and revitalize the sugar industry. During its July 1st meeting, Cabinet reviewed the findings of the Commission of Inquiry into the sugar industry and approved key components of a new Strategic Action Plan.

Central to this plan is the establishment of a Sugar Cane Industry Authority tasked with spearheading strategic planning, development, and modernization of the sector.

The government says this move is aimed at addressing long-standing challenges in the industry and creating a more sustainable and profitable future for stakeholders.

The newly proposed authority will focus on updating and improving practices and policies, signaling a shift in how Belize supports and manages one of its most important agricultural sectors.
