By Belize Live News Staff: The sugar industry in Belize is facing one of its most serious threats in recent history. In a rare joint statement, all four major sugarcane farmers’ associations have declared the sector to be in a “state of crisis,” citing massive crop losses due to aggressive pests and a devastating fungus that now threatens the industry’s survival.
The leaders of the associations signed a resolution warning that the industry is on the brink, overwhelmed by unprecedented biological threats. They called the situation a “tipping point” that could result in long-term damage if immediate action is not taken.
The joint resolution outlines three urgent areas for government support: price adjustments for molasses, domestic sugar, and electricity produced from bagasse. The groups emphasized the need for increased income support and regulatory help to prevent widespread collapse.
The statement ends with a strong appeal to the Government of Belize to intervene without delay. The leadership of all four associations submitted the document to Cabinet, which reportedly discussed the issue in detail on Tuesday alongside a visiting ASR executive.
