By Belize Live News Staff: The Caye Caulker Village Council has issued a public statement condemning what it describes as a pattern of escalating police violence and abuse against youth on the island. The Council said that recent incidents involving officers mirror a disturbing cycle that has, in the past, ended in tragedy.
In the release, the CCVC emphasized that police officers must be held to the same legal standards as every citizen and that there is no justification for the use of deadly force on unarmed individuals. The Council called on judicial and ministerial authorities to ensure the matter is not swept under the rug.
The release also criticized the conduct of certain officers, saying some behave “no different than bullies, gang members, and thugs,” and urged for higher accountability.
The Village Council pledged to follow up on the issue and stated clearly: “Justice must prevail.”
