By Belize Live News Staff: A second tropical system is churning off the southwest coast of Mexico. Tropical Storm Flossie formed today in the Eastern Pacific and is located approximately 240 miles south of Acapulco. The system has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and is moving west at 9 mph.
While Flossie is currently a tropical storm, weather models suggest it could intensify into a hurricane in the coming days. Heavy rains are expected to lash several Mexican states, including Oaxaca, Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco.
Officials are on alert for flash flooding and mudslides in mountainous regions as moisture from the storm begins to move inland. Flossie’s track will keep it offshore for now, but continued strengthening and moisture-rich bands could bring adverse weather conditions to coastal communities.
The National Hurricane Center and regional weather agencies are closely monitoring the storm’s development and issuing advisories as needed.
