By Belize Live News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño has left the country on official duty to represent Belize at the United Nations Ocean Conference 2025, taking place in Nice, France. The Prime Minister departed on June 7 and is expected to return on June 15.
The Ocean Conference, which brings together global leaders, scientists, and policymakers, is focused on strengthening international cooperation to protect the world’s oceans and advance sustainable development goals. Prime Minister Briceño’s attendance signals Belize’s ongoing commitment to ocean conservation, marine biodiversity, and climate action—issues that are particularly urgent for small coastal nations like Belize.
While the Prime Minister is away, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources, Mining and Petroleum, Cordel Hyde, has been appointed Acting Prime Minister.
Belize, known for its barrier reef, marine reserves, and blue economy initiatives, is expected to participate in high-level discussions surrounding sustainable ocean governance, climate financing, and the protection of marine ecosystems.
This trip aligns with Belize’s broader diplomatic agenda to champion environmental leadership on the global stage.
