Belize launches rural weather station network to strengthen disaster resilience

By Belize Live News Staff: A major upgrade to Belize’s national observation network is underway, as the National Meteorological Service (NMS) installs and upgrades 13 weather stations in partnership with the Resilient Rural Belize Programme (RRB).

The stations will empower local farmers and rural households with real-time climate and agrometeorological data. These tools are designed to help communities better prepare for extreme weather, improve agricultural decisions, and reduce disaster risks.

Officials say the final three stations will be in place by June 30. The Ministry also announced that a mobile app is in development to make weather and early warning information more accessible to both the public and the agriculture sector.

“This real-time data is critical,” said the NMS team, “not just for long-term climate planning but also for immediate response to floods, droughts, and tropical storms.”
