Brother turns blade on brother in Toledo Village slaying

Orange Walk man critically injured in chopping incident, police investigating

By Belize Live News Staff: A family dispute turned deadly in Medina Bank, Toledo District on Sunday night, resulting in the chopping death of the village’s 50-year-old alcalde, Romano Cal. His brother, Rafael Cal, is now in police custody as the lead suspect.

Police responded to a call at 8:10 p.m. and found Romano Cal with severe chop wounds. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the Punta Gorda Hospital.

The motive for the attack remains unclear. Police say the altercation appears to have happened after Rafael returned to the family residence, and initial investigations suggest drugs or alcohol were not factors.
