By Belize Live News Staff: A recent expedition to the highest point of the Chiquibul Forest Reserve led to the discovery of a rarely seen predator — the Central American Eyelash Viper. With its distinctive scales and near-perfect camouflage, the venomous snake was found coiled along forest vegetation by researchers surveying the area’s biodiversity.
Eyelash Vipers are classified as pitvipers due to the heat-sensing pits located between their eyes and nostrils, which allow them to detect the body heat of their prey. This discovery not only highlights the species’ elusive nature but also reinforces the ecological value of the Chiquibul Reserve as a haven for rare and important wildlife.
The sighting has been celebrated by conservationists as further proof of the region’s rich biological heritage.
