By Belize Live News Staff: Belmopan, May 6, 2025 – As the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) prepares for a planned demonstration in Belmopan on Friday, May 9, 2025, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has issued a memorandum to all school authorities clarifying that schools will remain open.
According to the memorandum from Chief Education Officer Yolanda Gongora, all schools across the country are to operate as usual in accordance with Rule 102(4) of the Education Rules. The Ministry emphasized that Friday will be a regular school day and that transportation services for students will continue as scheduled.
The memo also highlighted the Education (Amendment) Rules SI 87 of 2012, reminding school principals and managements that they do not have the authority to cancel classes or issue notices to parents regarding closures. Only the Managing Authorities hold that responsibility.
School administrators have been asked to ensure that all principals, teachers, and parents are informed of the directive. The Ministry thanked stakeholders in advance for their cooperation in maintaining continuity in education services during the demonstration.
The BNTU has not yet issued a public response to the Ministry’s position.
