By Belize Live News Staff: Belize’s proactive agricultural health response has resulted in just 63 reported cases of New World Screwworm (NWS) since December 2024, with no human infections and limited geographic spread. This achievement was highlighted by Agriculture Minister Jose Abelardo Mai during a ministerial summit in San Salvador, where leaders from across Central America, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic gathered to address the pest.
Unlike neighboring countries, Belize has managed containment without releasing sterile flies. While cases were reported in several districts, the Corozal District remains untouched, and Orange Walk has reported only two instances.
Minister Mai emphasized that Belize’s success is rooted in effective coordination among local and regional stakeholders, including the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), the BLPA, and international partners. He stressed the importance of maintaining this unity as the region prepares for an integrated eradication campaign.
With Nicaragua facing over 121,000 cases and 94 human infections, Belize’s data positions it as a model for effective NWS response. Efforts are now focused on refining regional strategies and ensuring long-term pest control through policy harmonization and shared resources.
