By Belize Live News Staff: Health officials in Belize are closely monitoring a localized measles outbreak after five new cases were confirmed in the Cayo District, all linked to a single household. These cases follow the initial detection of two imported infections earlier this month.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness has ramped up contact tracing and testing efforts, identifying over twenty school-based contacts. Officials confirmed that while several individuals were vaccinated, others were either unvaccinated or had unclear immunization records—raising concern about potential gaps in protection.
Fourteen samples from the identified group were sent to Mexico for laboratory testing, and all have so far tested negative for the virus. While this offers some reassurance, MOHW is maintaining high alert as they continue testing and monitoring for additional signs of transmission.
The ministry is appealing to the public to stay informed, ensure vaccinations are current, and cooperate with health authorities. The symptoms of measles include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, rash, and red or bloodshot eyes.
Belize has not seen widespread measles activity in recent years, and MOHW remains committed to preventing further spread.
