“Thank you, Belize”: Howell Grange speaks out after surviving hijacking incident

Captain Howell Grange discharged from medical care; Tropic Air announces enhanced safety measures

By Belize Live News Staff: Howell Grange, the pilot involved in the recent hijacking attempt aboard a domestic Tropic Air flight, has spoken publicly for the first time since the terrifying ordeal. In an emotional message shared today, Grange expressed deep gratitude to the people of Belize and the global aviation community for their outpouring of love, support, and prayers.

“The Belizean sky came to a brief pause,” he wrote, reflecting on the moment the in-flight emergency unfolded. “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the people of Belize and those abroad for your kind words, genuine concern, and above all your prayers—which I believe are the reason I’m still here today.”
Grange, who remains hospitalized at Belize Healthcare Partners, said he is receiving excellent care and remains in good spirits as he recovers. His message extended special thanks to his family, close friends, fellow pilots, Tropic Air, aviation authorities, and the Belizean security forces for their roles in handling the situation.
He also offered praise to passengers Mr. Brown and Jair Castaneda, who acted with extraordinary courage during the attempted hijacking. “Congratulations on your bravery,” he said. “I am forever grateful for your help and wish you both a smooth and speedy recovery.”
To the passengers aboard the flight, Grange extended his deepest appreciation for staying calm during the chaos. “We all have loved ones who were deeply worried, but together, we made it through.”
Grange’s message also recognized the professionalism of Belize’s police, coast guard, BDF, and emergency responders, whose swift actions helped ensure the safety of all onboard.
Though the traumatic incident has left physical and emotional wounds, Grange remains hopeful and centered. “Through faith, family, and prayers, I am able to stay positive and focus on healing,” he wrote. “I thank the Good Lord for giving me a second chance at life—one that I will cherish even more deeply moving forward.”
