By Belize Live News Staff: Police have arrested and charged a Punta Gorda resident in connection with the attempted murder of Derek Hines, which occurred on the night of Saturday, April 19, 2025, at the intersection of Prince and West Street in Punta Gorda Town.
Following a thorough investigation, 35-year-old Felix Gonzalez Jr., a self-employed Belizean of #9 West Street, was formally arrested and charged on Monday. Police obtained a warrant in the first instance and proceeded to lay charges of Attempted Murder and Use of Deadly Means of Harm against Gonzalez.
The charges stem from an incident that left Hines with serious injuries after an apparent targeted attack. Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive, but residents reported hearing commotion in the area shortly before emergency responders arrived on the scene.
Police say their investigation is ongoing and additional charges or arrests may follow. In the meantime, Gonzalez is expected to appear in court for arraignment in the coming days.
Residents of Punta Gorda have expressed concern over the recent violence in the area and are calling for stronger community policing and conflict resolution initiatives.
