By Belize Live News Staff: Pope Francis, the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church and spiritual leader to more than 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, has died at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed his passing on Sunday morning at 7:35 a.m. (Vatican time), following ongoing health struggles in recent months.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell made the announcement:
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis… his entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.”
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis made history in 2013 as the first pontiff from South America. Over his twelve-year papacy, he became known as the “People’s Pope” for his commitment to the poor, refugees, and those marginalized in society.
Pope Francis’s final public appearance came just Saturday, when he greeted crowds in St. Peter’s Square during Easter Sunday services, only weeks after being discharged from a 38-day hospital stay for complications including pneumonia and kidney concerns.
His papacy was characterized by bold reform efforts and a compassionate tone toward issues often avoided by his predecessors. From climate justice to LGBTQ inclusion, Pope Francis earned admiration for his openness, humility, and global perspective.
He also left his mark on Belize. In 2015, Pope Francis sent a message of solidarity following Hurricane Earl, praising the resilience of Belizeans. His remarks were later echoed by the local clergy in national prayer services held across the country.
The Church will now begin preparations for the papal conclave, a secretive and sacred process to elect the next pope, which typically begins 15 to 20 days after a pontiff’s passing.
As bells toll in cathedrals from Rome to Belize City, Catholics around the world reflect on the life and legacy of a pope who sought to bring the Church closer to the people.
