By Belize Live News Staff: Pope Francis, the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church and spiritual leader to more than 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, has died at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed his passing on Sunday morning at 7:35 a.m. (Vatican time), following ongoing health struggles in recent months.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell made the announcement:
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis… his entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.”
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis made history in 2013 as the first pontiff from South America. Over his twelve-year papacy, he became known as the “People’s Pope” for his commitment to the poor, refugees, and those marginalized in society.
Pope Francis’s final public appearance came just Saturday, when he greeted crowds in St. Peter’s Square during Easter Sunday services, only weeks after being discharged from a 38-day hospital stay for complications including pneumonia and kidney concerns.
His papacy was characterized by bold reform efforts and a compassionate tone toward issues often avoided by his predecessors. From climate justice to LGBTQ inclusion, Pope Francis earned admiration for his openness, humility, and global perspective.
He also left his mark on Belize. In 2015, Pope Francis sent a message of solidarity following Hurricane Earl, praising the resilience of Belizeans. His remarks were later echoed by the local clergy in national prayer services held across the country.
The Church will now begin preparations for the papal conclave, a secretive and sacred process to elect the next pope, which typically begins 15 to 20 days after a pontiff’s passing.
As bells toll in cathedrals from Rome to Belize City, Catholics around the world reflect on the life and legacy of a pope who sought to bring the Church closer to the people.

Belizeans returning to their regular routines after the Easter holiday weekend can expect a calm and pleasant start to the new week. The National Meteorological Service reports that generally fair weather conditions are prevailing across the country today, April 21, 2025. The forecast calls for sunny skies with occasional cloudy spells and only isolated showers, making it ideal for both outdoor activities and coastal relaxation.
Winds are blowing from the east at 10 to 20 knots and will remain gusty at times, leading to moderate to rough sea conditions. The sea state is expected to generate waves between five to seven feet, prompting the issuance of a small craft caution. Operators of small vessels are advised to navigate carefully and remain within safe harbors where necessary.
Daytime temperatures will climb to highs of 89°F inland and 85°F along the coast, while nighttime lows will dip to a comfortable 71°F inland and 78°F on the coast. With relatively low humidity and stable conditions, the weather pattern reflects a typical dry season day in Belize. Looking ahead to Tuesday, similar weather conditions are forecasted, with minimal rainfall and continued breezy trade winds.

As the world comes to terms with the death of His Holiness Pope Francis, Belize has joined the global Catholic family in mourning the loss of one of the most beloved pontiffs in modern history.
The Belize Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade issued a heartfelt tribute earlier today, honoring Pope Francis for his “compassion, humility, and peace”—qualities that endeared him not only to Catholics but to people of all faiths. The statement also recognized his enduring legacy and extended Belize’s deepest condolences to the international Catholic community.
“His legacy will forever be remembered,” the Ministry stated.
In a poignant moment for Belizean history, Prime Minister John Briceño met with Pope Francis at the Vatican in 2024, where they spoke about the Catholic Church’s longstanding contributions to Belize’s national development. The Church has played a pivotal role in shaping Belize’s education, health care, and social systems—a legacy that Pope Francis continued to champion throughout his papacy.
The photograph shared with the government’s statement captures a warm moment between the two leaders, a symbolic gesture of the strong ties between Belize and the Holy See.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, served as pontiff from 2013 until his death in 2025. His historic election as the first Latin American pope brought with it a new era of pastoral leadership—one that emphasized service to the poor, inclusivity, and moral courage on global issues like migration, climate change, and inequality.
Belizeans have taken to social media to share their sorrow and gratitude. Many remember Pope Francis not just as a spiritual leader, but as a voice for the voiceless.
Churches across Belize are expected to hold masses and prayer vigils in the coming days. In the words of one local parishioner: “He led with love, and he reminded us all what faith in action looks like.”
As the Vatican begins preparations for the papal conclave, Belize stands in solidarity with the global community—honoring a pope whose message of hope and unity resonated far beyond the walls of the Church.
