Police vow accountability as teens face multiple charges in shocking horse abuse case

By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize Police Department has confirmed that three teenagers captured in a viral video brutally attacking a horse will face multiple criminal charges, including Cruelty to Animals, Cattle Theft, and Abetment to Commit Cruelty to Animals.

The disturbing footage, which circulated widely across social media platforms, showed the teens laughing while inflicting multiple chop wounds to the head and back of a tied-down horse. The incident has triggered widespread condemnation and renewed public debate about the lack of enforcement in animal cruelty cases across Belize.

In an official update, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams clarified the penalties and reaffirmed the department’s commitment to seeing justice served.

“Those involved will be charged with Cruel to Animals, contrary to section 326 of the Criminal Code. Contrary to what is being said, this offense carries a penalty of six months imprisonment,” said Williams.

He further noted that the teens will also be charged with Cattle Theft and Abetment to Commit Cruelty to Animals, both of which carry more severe penalties.

The horse, now known, miraculously survived the attack and is receiving medical attention from BAHA veterinarians, who are treating infected wounds believed to have been left untreated for days.

The case has sparked renewed demands from citizens and advocacy groups alike for stronger animal welfare laws, including longer sentencing guidelines and dedicated units to handle animal cruelty investigations.

Police confirmed that the three teens remain in custody and will be formally arraigned in court in the coming days.

Authorities say they are working with prosecutors to ensure a solid case is built and that this incident serves as a turning point in how animal abuse is handled by Belize’s justice system.
