Injured horse “Onny” receives care from BAHA after shocking abuse

By Belize Live News Staff: A horse now known as “Onny” is receiving life-saving treatment from veterinarians at the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), days after a disturbing video showed him being violently chopped by a group of teenage boys.

The incident, which was recorded and widely circulated on social media, shows the horse tied down while it is attacked with a machete. Belizeans were horrified by the footage, which led to quick police action and the detention of three teenage suspects.

BAHA veterinarians responded to the call after Onny was discovered in a weakened state, suffering from multiple infected wounds along his back. Officials say the horse is now under medical supervision and that efforts are underway to stabilize his condition.

Community members and businesses have expressed support, with many asking how they can help. Reimers Feed Mill was among the first to step forward, publicly offering assistance and veterinary supplies for Onny’s recovery.

Police continue to investigate, and charges are expected soon. Meanwhile, animal rights advocates are calling for legislative reform to ensure such acts of cruelty are met with severe consequences.
