By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) is calling on government leaders to meet and engage in meaningful dialogue over what it describes as growing concerns affecting the future of the sugar industry and the livelihood of thousands of Belizean farmers.
In a press release issued today, the Association emphasized that their concerns stem directly from the farmers they represent—not from personal or political agendas. Central to their message is the need for national decision-makers to balance economic development with the interests of local communities, particularly as questions arise about the influence of multinational entities in the sector.
“We respect the position of the Prime Minister and the immense responsibilities he carries,” the Association stated. “However, the concerns we raised are not personal concerns; they reflect the serious concerns of our farmers.”
The BSCFA is inviting Prime Minister John Briceño, Agriculture Minister Jose Abelardo Mai, and Minister of State for Economic Development Osmond Martinez to a meeting on Friday, April 4, or at their earliest convenience. The goal is to address pending matters and develop strategies that support both the sugar industry and the farmers who sustain it.
The Association is also advocating for more inclusive national dialogue, stressing that constructive feedback and open conversations can guide the country toward better, more sustainable outcomes for its agricultural sector.
“Open dialogue and understanding, rather than dismissal, will ensure that we all move forward together for the betterment of our farmers, industry and country,” the release concluded.
