Sandhill man out on bail after theft charge for selling woman’s bed

By Belize Live News Staff: A 26-year-old Sandhill resident has been granted bail after being charged with theft for allegedly selling a woman’s $850 bed that was left in his possession.

Elon Emmanuel Tillett appeared unrepresented before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where he was arraigned on a single count of theft.

According to the complaint, the alleged incident took place on January 9, 2025. Tillett initially pleaded guilty but offered an explanation, stating that the woman had left the bed at his home in 2024 for safekeeping. He claimed that after repeatedly trying to contact her with no response, he eventually sold the bed due to financial difficulties.

After hearing his explanation, the presiding magistrate advised Tillett to seek legal advice before formally maintaining his guilty plea. A not-guilty plea was instead entered on his behalf, allowing him time to reconsider his legal position.

With no objections to bail, Tillett was granted self-bail in the sum of $500. He is expected to return to court on May 19, 2025, when the case will continue.
