Briceño waffles on retirement, suggests he may run again

By Belize Live News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño is walking back on his earlier declaration that the 2025 general election would be his last.

During an appearance on Wednesday’s episode of Uncut with Jules Vasquez, the PM hinted that he may seek another term, citing the need for a proper succession plan within the People’s United Party (PUP).

Briceño admitted that he initially intended to step down, believing that two or three terms were enough. However, he said he now feels a responsibility to remain in leadership until a solid plan is in place to prevent the kind of internal collapse currently happening within the UDP.

“When you look at 2008, there was no succession plan, and because of that, we ended up giving Mr. Barrow three terms,” Briceño explained, adding that he does not want to see the PUP fall into the same situation.

When pressed by Jules Vasquez on whether he was backtracking on his decision, Briceño admitted:

“Yes, I am hedging. Not because I want to, but because I have to.”

His comments have sparked mixed reactions among Belizeans—some see it as a necessary move for party stability, while others believe it’s time for fresh leadership.

For now, Briceño remains undecided on his future, but with this latest revelation, his political career may be far from over.
