No trauma, no carbon monoxide – What killed the three American women in Belize?

No trauma, no carbon monoxide – What killed the three American women in Belize?

By Belize Live News Staff: Authorities are working to determine the cause of death of three American women—Kaoutar Naqqad, 23, Imane Mallah, 24, and Wafae El-Arar, 26—who were found dead in their hotel suite on Saturday morning.

While initial findings suggest acute pulmonary edema (fluid buildup in the lungs) as the terminal cause, forensic experts are still trying to determine what triggered it. Executive Director of the National Forensic Science Service, Gian Cho, explained that toxicology tests could take up to a month, with results expected in stages.

Police Commissioner Chester Williams confirmed no signs of violence or physical trauma, but noted vomit was found beside each woman, raising suspicion of a possible drug overdose. Alcohol and gummies found in the room are undergoing forensic analysis, though those tests will be conducted outside Belize.

Fire Chief Colin Gillet ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning after multiple tests showed no presence of the gas. Meanwhile, authorities continue to examine whether controlled substances played a role in the deaths.

Despite international scrutiny, Williams assured that Belize remains a safe destination for travelers, stating, “We rank among the countries with the least incidents against tourists.” However, the U.S. State Department currently has Belize under an increased travel warning, urging caution for American visitors.

Revere City, Massachusetts, where the women resided, has acknowledged the families’ skepticism over the investigation. As Belizean authorities push to uncover the truth, the case remains open, with officials emphasizing the importance of providing closure to grieving relatives and maintaining the nation’s reputation.
