By Belize Live News Staff: A small group of retired public officers gathered outside the Eleanor Hall building on Wednesday morning, determined to make their voices heard. Representing the Association of Beneficiaries and Retired Public Officers (ABRPO), the protesters called on Prime Minister John Briceño to fulfill his promise to help dissolve the Public Service Workers Trust, which they claim has failed to deliver benefits owed to them.
The dispute dates back to 1995-1997, when government employees were denied annual salary increments. The withheld funds were later invested in Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) shares, generating dividends over the years. However, retirees say they have yet to receive their fair share of these earnings, impacting their pensions and financial well-being in retirement.
ABRPO Interim Vice President Lizbeth Castillo highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that many of the over 9,000 beneficiaries are now in their 60s, 70s, and 80s, facing mounting medical expenses. With members passing away without receiving their benefits, the group is determined to continue their weekly protests until action is taken.
Retired teacher and ABRPO member Barbra Elrington expressed frustration with both the government and courts, stating that despite their long years of service, retirees have been neglected. The group hopes that by maintaining public pressure, they can secure the long-overdue payments before more members pass away.
The protest follows a similar demonstration in Belmopan on Tuesday, with the association vowing to continue their advocacy until the government addresses their demands.
