By Belize Live News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño has made it clear that no court injunction will interfere with his constitutional right to call elections, despite ongoing efforts by election reform advocates to halt the process. With general elections set for March 12, legal challenges have emerged pushing for redistricting before the vote.
Briceño dismissed these attempts as irrelevant to his decision, stating that choosing an election date is solely the prime minister’s responsibility. He emphasized that this decision was made after months of discussions with his advisors, and not in response to external pressure.
The PUP leader, who is confidently steering his party toward another election, reaffirmed that his government has acted in good faith and within the law. While critics argue that redistricting should have been completed before the election, Briceño insists that the timing of his decision was strategic and legally sound.
As the election campaign heats up, Briceño’s firm stance signals that the March 12 polls will proceed as planned, regardless of ongoing legal disputes.
