Belize’s Blue Economy gets $64M boost for conservation and development

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize has secured over $64 million BZD in funding from the World Bank’s International Development Association and other global agencies to support its blue economy initiatives. The funding will focus on coastal and marine resource management, safe water supply, and pollution reduction in urban areas.

The “Belize Blue Cities and Beyond” project aims to tackle environmental challenges such as overfishing, habitat loss, and urban pollution affecting the Barrier Reef and coastal communities. The initiative will include water quality control strategies, sustainable fisheries policies, and sanitation improvements in areas like Belize City, San Pedro, and Punta Gorda.

According to Kennedy Carillo, CEO of the Ministry of Blue Economy, Belize is also working on carbon market initiatives, creating high-quality carbon credits that can be traded internationally to support sustainable financing.

The funding comes from multiple sources, including the Global Environment Facility, the PROBLUE multi-donor Trust Fund, and the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery. This investment is expected to enhance Belize’s long-term environmental sustainability and strengthen its position in the global blue economy.
