By Belize Live News Staff: Dr. Osmond Martinez, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, visited Obregon Coconut Company Ltd. in Bella Vista Village on January 23, marking a significant step in Belize’s effort to strengthen its global market position through agricultural innovation.
Established in 2018, Obregon Coconut Company has become a key player in Belize’s agricultural sector, cultivating hybrid coconuts across 3,500 acres, with over 2,100 acres utilizing advanced drip irrigation systems. In 2024, the company harvested over two million coconuts and is projecting a remarkable 10 million in 2025. Future plans include a state-of-the-art packing station, slated for completion by 2026, and increased export opportunities within CARICOM, the United States, and the European Union.
During the visit, Obregon representatives highlighted challenges such as drought, pest control, and labor shortages while requesting government support in areas like irrigation infrastructure and labor policies. Minister Martinez reassured the company of the government’s commitment to addressing these issues, emphasizing the importance of agricultural enterprises in achieving export diversification and sustainable economic growth.
The visit underscores Belize’s proactive approach to empowering local businesses, fostering international trade partnerships, and reinforcing its position as a leading exporter of high-quality, sustainable agricultural products.
