Rental SUV destroyed in blaze on John Smith Road; American driver escapes unharmed

By Belize Live News Staff: A rental SUV caught fire and was completely destroyed on John Smith Road on Friday afternoon, leaving its driver unharmed but without her belongings.

Police reported that 50-year-old American accountant Rachel L. Goldman was driving the 2013 Ford Escape she had rented from AQ Auto Rentals when smoke began emanating from the front of the vehicle. After pulling over to the side of the road, Goldman heard an explosion, and flames engulfed the car.

Goldman managed to escape but was unable to retrieve her belongings, including her passport, credit card, an iPhone 12, clothing, and other items. The SUV, valued at $30,000 BZD, was also destroyed.

Firefighters arrived promptly and extinguished the flames. The scene was processed and photographed by investigators, but the cause of the fire remains under review. Police confirmed that the vehicle was insured under third-party coverage from RF&G Insurance.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident while urging drivers to report mechanical issues promptly to avoid similar situations.
