Christmas Eve crash lands BDF truck driver in legal trouble

By Belize Live News  Staff: A Belize Defence Force (BDF) truck driver has been charged following a Christmas Eve crash on the Southern Highway. Joseph Cifiriano Avila, 48, of Lord’s Bank Village, faces multiple charges, including “failure to provide specimen” and “driving without due care and attention.”

According to police reports, Avila was driving the BDF vehicle when it overturned on December 24, with only one passenger on board. Officers responding to the scene detected a strong scent of alcohol on Avila’s breath, but he allegedly refused to provide a sample for testing.

The crash, which caused no significant injuries, has sparked questions about responsible driving during the holiday period.

The authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant on the roads and avoid impaired driving as investigations into the incident continue. Avila is slated to appear in court to answer the charges.
