By Belize Live News Staff: A groundbreaking stride in Belize’s criminal justice reform was unveiled today with the launch of Criminal Record Expungement Services. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs in partnership with the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, and the Attorney General’s Ministry, aims to transform lives by offering second chances.
This service stems from the recent enactment of the Criminal Records (Rehabilitation of Offenders) Act 2024, enabling individuals with past criminal convictions to apply for the removal of these records. Recognizing the barriers that a criminal record imposes on personal and professional growth, this initiative seeks to reintegrate individuals into society with dignity and opportunity.
A newly formed Criminal Records Board will oversee the evaluation and processing of applications, ensuring thorough and fair consideration. Applications are accessible countrywide through offices of the Ministry of Human Development and Ministry of Home Affairs in Belmopan, as well as online on the Ministry’s website.
This initiative is a beacon of hope for countless individuals, paving the way for renewed opportunities and reaffirming Belize’s dedication to progressive criminal justice reforms.
