By Belize Live News Staff: Sister Luke Boiarski, a member of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, has spent more than five decades creating change across the globe, including in Belize, where her work has brought housing, hope, and a sense of community to families in need.
Born in Bellaire, Ohio, Sister Luke grew up in a multicultural household that shaped her ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. Her vocation, inspired by the Sisters of Charity she encountered in school, has driven her to bring practical solutions and heartfelt care to underserved communities.
In Belize, her mission is visible in the more than 27 houses built under her leadership, providing shelter and stability to families. “Building these homes is more than constructing walls,” Sister Luke says. “It’s about creating a space where families can thrive.”
Her volunteer program gathers individuals from various walks of life, including Belizean locals and international participants. Many volunteers fund their own travel, sacrificing vacation time and personal luxuries to contribute. “People are filled with God’s grace and simply want to help,” she remarks.
Beyond construction projects, Sister Luke has initiated sewing ministries where women craft dresses and essential items for children, adding a personal touch to each mission. “It’s all about relationships,” she says. “When people work together, incredible things happen.”
The ripple effects of her work extend far beyond Belize. Sister Luke has led disaster relief efforts in the U.S. and abroad, responding to crises in Nepal, India, and multiple U.S. states. Her commitment to service has inspired more than 500 volunteers globally.
“People are the same everywhere,” Sister Luke reflects. “What unites us is our shared humanity and the need to find something greater than ourselves.”
Through her work in Belize and beyond, Sister Luke continues to answer the call of service, proving that compassion and dedication can transform lives.
