By Belize Live News Staff: As Belize faces the aftermath of devastating floods, Prime Minister John Briceño has shed light on the daunting task of recovery. From damaged roads and bridges to overflowing culverts, the financial toll of rebuilding is expected to be significant. Speaking on the matter, the Prime Minister acknowledged the government’s limited resources but reaffirmed his commitment to supporting affected communities.
“We’re doing everything we can,” Briceño said, referencing the $1.5 million allocated to NEMO in the last supplementary budget. “This funding is crucial, and we must ensure it is readily available to address the urgent needs of our people.”
The Prime Minister also highlighted ongoing collaboration with other government officials, including Minister Julius Espat and the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH). Together, they are assessing the widespread damage to vital infrastructure such as highways and village roads. “The level of destruction we’re seeing, particularly in sugar roads and village streets, is unprecedented,” Briceño explained.
While visiting flood-impacted areas alongside Alex Balona and Landy Habet, Briceño stressed the importance of repairing and upgrading streets in affected villages. “Even the recent upgrades are being undone by the continuous rain and floodwaters washing away the streets,” he said. “We will have to return and redo the work, ensuring these areas remain accessible.”
Despite the challenges, Briceño expressed confidence in the local leadership and their dedication to the recovery process. “We work closely with the mayors. They are deeply involved in ensuring the well-being of their communities, and we stand united in our mission to serve the people.”
The government is now focused on mobilizing resources to ensure that critical infrastructure is restored promptly. However, with substantial costs looming, Briceño hinted at the need for sustained efforts and possible additional funding to fully recover from the damage left in the wake of the recent floods.
