By Belize Live News Staff: Speculation about early general elections gained traction following a WhatsApp message hinting at a February 12th election. Combined with a supplementary budget allocation of over $300,000 for “general elections,” many wondered if an early vote was imminent. However, Prime Minister John Briceño has clarified that while elections will be held next year, the exact date remains as scheduled in 2025.
Addressing the supplementary budget, the PM explained it was a routine allocation to repay funds used for the recent by-election. “People are getting too excited over nothing,” Briceño said, emphasizing that the budget was not a sign of early elections but a financial adjustment to cover prior electoral costs.
Briceño also responded to political pressures, saying, “We will call the elections when we believe it’s the right time.” He highlighted the administration’s ongoing efforts to reduce poverty, manage inflation, and support Belizeans with opportunities for growth.
Despite the rumors, the government appears firmly focused on fulfilling its mandate and tackling economic challenges.
