By Belize Live News Staff: Belize’s Senate on Tuesday blocked the appointment of Maria Rodriguez as Temporary Auditor General, leaving the country without an Auditor General for a fourth consecutive year.
The proposed appointment failed to gain the necessary support from the opposition and social partners. According to the Opposition, the government’s attempt to appoint a temporary auditor is an inadequate solution for a role critical to ensuring transparency and accountability. They argue that efforts should instead focus on finding a permanent replacement for former Auditor General Dorothy Bradley.
Critics have pointed out that the four-month appointment would not provide the continuity needed for such an essential role. They believe the delay in finding a permanent replacement is detrimental to the country’s financial oversight.
However, the government insists that even a short-term appointment would help to complete key processes, such as recruitment and pending audits, during the transition period. The absence of an Auditor General, they argue, poses a significant risk to the country’s financial operations.
Despite the government’s position, the motion was ultimately rejected, prolonging the vacancy and raising concerns about governance and financial oversight.
The Belizean public remains divided, with civil society groups urging the government to prioritize a long-term solution.
