By Belize Live News Staff: Tragedy struck on Thursday night when 28-year-old Selvin Humes was fatally stabbed near the Southern Corner restaurant, located adjacent to the cemetery in Independence Village. Humes succumbed to his injuries shortly after the attack.
According to police reports, the altercation began when Humes allegedly threw a beer at the suspect, prompting the assailant to retaliate with a knife. The suspect, now in custody, claims the attack was in self-defense.
Humes, originally from the Ghost Town area of Belize City, had recently relocated to Independence Village to be closer to his family. Known for his quiet demeanor, Humes often helped others by fixing phones and tablets.
Family members remain in shock over the incident. Speaking to the press, a cousin of the deceased shared, “We don’t want to speculate about what happened. We just got a call last night saying he had an altercation, got stabbed, and died.”
Humes had been planning to visit his mother in Belize City shortly before the incident, adding another layer of heartbreak for his grieving family.
“Selvin was a helpful person,” his cousin continued. “He just communicated with his mom, telling her he was coming home Monday. Now, that will never happen.”
The family is still processing the loss. “We’re in disbelief. Selvin was not the kind of person anyone would expect this to happen to,” the cousin added.
Authorities have detained the suspect, and the case remains under investigation. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) will determine whether the suspect’s claim of self-defense could lead to a ruling of justifiable homicide.
