Taiwan set to open market for Belizean shrimp, strengthening bilateral ties

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize and Taiwan have further strengthened their diplomatic and trade ties, with Taiwan’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Lin Chia-Lung, announcing that Taiwan is preparing to open its market to Belizean shrimp. This development, revealed during a press conference in Belmopan this week with Belize’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francis Fonseca, marks a significant milestone in trade cooperation between the two nations.

Dr. Lin expressed optimism about the potential for Belizean seafood, specifically shrimp, in Taiwan, noting the popularity of Belize’s premium-quality “Marie Sharps.” The announcement comes after years of negotiations, with recent progress allowing for an onsite inspection phase that, once completed, will finalize the export arrangements.

In addition to boosting Belize’s shrimp industry, Taiwan also pledged financial support for infrastructure development, specifically the rehabilitation of Belcan Bridge in Belize City. This support responds to a request made by Prime Minister John Briceño during his visit to Taiwan earlier this year.

Dr. Lin emphasized Taiwan’s commitment to safety and urban development in Belize, underlining the robust and growing relationship between the two countries.
