Elevated river conditions prompt archaeological site closures in Belize

By Belize Live News Staff: In response to heightened river levels, the Institute of Archaeology (NICH) Belize has closed four archaeological reserves: Xunantunich, Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM), Barton Creek, and Nohoch Che’en. The announcement, made early on October 31, 2024, advises that the closures are in effect until further notice, with visitor safety as the top priority.

While these popular sites are temporarily off-limits, the Institute assures that all other archaeological reserves remain open. As the rainy season affects water levels across the country, the Institute is monitoring the situation and will adjust access to these and other sites based on evolving conditions.
