By Belize Live News Staff: UDP Chairman Michael Peyrefitte downplayed the recent takeover of the UDP headquarters by Tracy Panton’s faction, calling the building “just a symbol.” Speaking to the media, Peyrefitte emphasized that a political party is more than its headquarters and suggested that the real aim of Panton’s Alliance for Democracy (AFD) faction goes beyond controlling a physical space.
According to Peyrefitte, Panton’s actions are part of a broader scheme that plays into the hands of the PUP. He alleged that certain forces want the public focused on this internal feud rather than issues of national importance. “They want the country talking about this, not about the serious issues we need to address,” Peyrefitte stated.
He urged party supporters to look past the takeover, asserting that UDP’s leadership remains intact under Shyne Barrow. Peyrefitte believes Panton’s approach harms the party more than it helps, warning that AFD’s actions could ultimately strengthen the PUP heading into the 2025 elections.
